Black girls, Question about braids!!!?

I have my hair in braids that are straight, but I saw a girl with braids that were curled, as spirals (Like if you twirled a braid around your finger). How do you get your hair like that? Do you buy the extensions already curled. Or do you have to curl them yourself. Thank you
