My friend had his artwork censored?

I am in an art show that is supposed to represent all types of art and artists. When my friend put up several crosses and the word Jesus, several artists freaked out. They wrote profanity and even later painted over his work. And yet there are body parts, vulgar language and that goes untouched. What can I do here? Do I write in to the paper? What?
