Question about radioactivity chain reactions: see details.....?

to start the reaction, the nucleus of the radioactive atom is bombarded with a slow neutron. my question is: from where is the 'free neutron' obtained? i mean, in order to get a neutron, wouldn't you have to break open an atom? and wouldnt that create an explosion? or is there anothr way of obtaining a neutron for this purpose?
