Rabbits and cigarette smoke?

Hi! I was pondering getting a rabbit. I have everything I would need from previous pets and such but the sites I have read always add at the end some small note about cigarette smoke being harmful. Is this true? I have a family member that smokes like a chimney and I don't want to endanger a rabbit. I was eyeing some mini rex rabbits, if that counts for anything. Will the smoke affect them if they are in another room? Or how much does it take to affect them?
